ROTA delivers ambulance, food and medical supplies in Gaza

Qatar-based NGO Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) is currently spearheading emergency relief operations for victims of the conflict in Gaza.

A ROTA delegation has been present in Rafah since last week to make sure that humanitarian aid reaches the besieged strip.

In response to an urgent request by the Palestinian Ministry of Health, ROTA has delivered an ambulance at Rafah border to facilitate relief operations for the wounded in Gaza. More ambulances are planned to be delivered pending clearance and permits from authorities at the border.

ROTA has also managed to distribute over 5,000 food packages including sugar, rice and oil at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza. Medical supplies including medicines and equipment were also distributed at Nisar Hospital, Al Shifa Hospital and Children Specialist Hospital.

Omnia Nour, Director of ROTA, said:
"There is a crucial need for urgent humanitarian aid and we are steadfast in our resolve to assist the victims of this on-going conflict in the strip. Over 50% of the population in Gaza are innocent children. We have to do everything that is possible, to help them survive this war."


ROTA's emergency response delegation, consisting of Omnia Nour, and two other ROTA representatives, is in Egypt to oversee the distribution of food and medical supplies into Gaza. The team is also conducting meetings with other NGOs to channel high energy biscuits, water and milk from the West Bank

ROTA to dedicate 17 new schools in Pakistan

Qatar-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Reach Out To Asia today announced plans to dedicate 17 new schools in northern Pakistan, which were completely devastated by a Kashmir earthquake in October 2005.

The 17 schools, including 10 permanent school buildings and seven temporary structures in the Union Council (UC) of Nar Sher Ali Khan in the state of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), will be dedicated on June 13 during a high-profile Qatari delegation visit to Pakistan next week.

The delegation, to be led by Her Excellency Sheikha Aisha Bint Faleh Al Thani, ROTA board member, Omnia Nour, Director of ROTA, and other top officials from ROTA and representatives from the Qatar Red Crescent and media.

The inauguration of the 17 schools is part of the first phase of rehabilitation efforts undertaken by ROTA in close coordination with the Pakistan Government, Qatar Red Crescent and other social and community organisations.

The schools were completely destroyed during the massive earthquake, which rocked the northern Pakistan on October 8, 2005 and resulted in the death of over 73,000 people. The estimated cost of damages was over $5bn and in excess of 3.3 million people were left injured or homeless.

ROTA was the one of the first NGOs to reach the devastated areas of northern Pakistan following the earthquake and provide basic amenities. The main objective of the ROTA school project, which will help provide educational access to over 2,300 students, is to assist the Pakistani community to restore some of the education systems destroyed due to the natural disaster.

The project also aims to enhance the quality of education by providing capacity training for teachers and administration, and has already seen the opening of seven libraries in the temporary schools.

In her comments, Omnia Nour, Director of ROTA, said: "ROTA has pledged all possible assistance to help those affected by the earthquake in Pakistan in 2005. It is a matter of great privilege that we have successfully accomplished the Phase I of our project aimed at offering the children access to quality education. We are extremely thankful to the Pakistani government, Qatar Red Crescent and other like-minded organisations in helping us in this humanitarian initiative."

She added: "The project, aimed at spreading smiles and education around in northern Pakistan, will also enable sharing of educational initiatives and curriculum, partake in collaborative projects and creating a partnership between students, teachers and faculty members, thereby increasing educational opportunities and bridging cultural divides throughout the Asian continent."

The other phases of the ROTA project in Pakistan, which continues till February 2011, includes equipping the schools with necessary capacity to improve quality of education, twinning of schools / connecting the universities and encouraging volunteer participation from the youth community in Pakistan and Qatar.

In her comments, Omnia Nour, Director at ROTA, said: "The earthquake in October 2005 was a devastating tragedy and we at ROTA are doing our best to help the people affected by the disaster. This handing over of the 17 schools will help enhance the accessibility and quality of education through educational facilities. We at ROTA are proud of being part of this endeavour."

In addition, ROTA and Qatar Red Crescent have also established library facilities, including bookshelves and furniture, at the schools to help the children achieve quality education. ROTA and QRC are also organising librarian training sessions to train the teachers in utilizing the facilities.

In addition to the restoration and rebuilding of the damaged education infrastructure in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (Muzaffarabad & Neelum, Bagh and Poonch), the project will have a direct impact on securing the achievement of educational objectives of students within the local community, national educational strategies and influence the achievement of universal UNESCO Education for All goals by 2015.

ROTA assists students displaced from Nahr Bared refugee camp

Reach Out to Asia (ROTA) is distributing school bags and supplies to Palestinian school children forced to flee their homes by the recent fighting in the Nahr Bared refugee camp, near Tripoli, Lebanon.

Thousands of students due to sit for their end of year exams have been displaced at a critical time in their education. The events in the camp forced families and their children to evacuate Nahr Bared quickly and without time to pack any of their personal belongings. The Reach Out to Asia team has been active in the area; providing school stationery and bags to 645 pupils.

The school bag project amounted to USD15,000, but as Omnia Nour, Director of Reach Out to Asia, explains:

"ROTA strongly supports the Education For All initiative and has joined the effort of the global community towards creating a positive change by 2015. The Achievement of this goal gets more and more difficult, especially after the occurrence of either natural or man made disasters. So much energy and resources are being diverted. More commitment and a stronger joint global effort is needed if we want to make a difference."

One of the recipients, Fatima Mahmoud Al-Ahmad a 15 year old student, who received one of the school bags and equipment spoke of her gratitude to ROTA:

"We were really in need of this kind of help. We needed schoolbags and stationary. They gave us hope and encouraged us to study and succeed despite the difficult conditions we are going through. Thank you ROTA."

Most of the students have moved from Nahr Al Bared refugee camp, 16km North of Tripoli, to Bedawi camp, approximately 20km away, in order sit for their exams.

Working in conjunction with the Al El Ershad Wal Eslah Organization, and with transportation help from the Qatar Red Crescent, ROTA distributed 645 school bags containing a copy book, engineering set, calculator, pens, pencils, erasers, sharpener and ruler to schoolchildren in grades 9 -12 (ages 14-18 years).

Doha , QATAR, 13 December, 2007 - Qatar-based NGO Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) has announced that it will shortly enter into a landmark partnership with universities at Qatar Foundation's 2,500-acre Education City campus in Doha. The five universities housed at Education City will be signing the MoU.
The MoU will provide vital impetus to the Connect ROTAsia Knowledge Network, which is aimed at providing quality educational resources and opportunities for students and educators Qatar, the Middle East, and Asia.
The partnership will pave the way for educators and students within the high-profile Education City, to collaborate with ROTA's schools and other higher education institutions in Asia through a web-based portal. Activities through the portal will enable universities at Education City, other higher education institutions and schools to share projects and curricula, besides partaking in collaborative projects and creating an authentic partnership between students, teachers and faculty members.
Commenting on the MoU, Omnia Nour, Director of ROTA, said: "We are privileged to have these universities' branch campuses as  partners in our Connect ROTAsia Knowledge Network, and we are confident that this MoU will be of great benefit to ROTA and the march forward on our ROTAsia program. This partnership will go a long way in information and resource-sharing and will contribute towards the sustainability of our projects. It is a large-scale project and is being supported by world-class universities. The goal is to enable our project schools to work with other institutions so they are constantly in touch and up-to-date."
Omnia added: "ROTA looks forward to further augment this partnership and it is a wonderful opportunity to expand access to more educational opportunities across Asia, which is our primary objective. The agreement is yet another testimony of ROTA's commitment to community service and education for all across Asia, helping us build bridges across cultures and a better future for all."
The MoU was signed by ROTA's Director, Omnia Nour; Dr Chuck Thorpe, Dean of The Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ); Dr Jim Reardon Anderson, Dean of Georgetown University Qatar (GUQ); Dr Mark Weichold, Dean of Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ); Allyson Vanstone, Dean of Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQ); and Dr Daniel Alonso, Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMCQ).
The MoU is also supported by ictQATAR, the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology in Qatar. ROTA had recently signed a partnership agreement with ictQataron Connect ROTAsia Knowledge Network.

ROTA Organized Iftar with Dhreima Children

Doha, September 14, 2009: Qatar-based NGO Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) called its volunteers back last week into a real moment of giving and sharing with Dhreima Qatar Orphan Foundation children a special Iftar event.
The Iftar, which was held at Qatar Foundation sponsored by an anonymous donor, and was attended by ROTA officials and volunteers from Jaidah Group, ROTA's Associate Partner. H.E. Sheikha Aisha bint Faleh Al Thani, ROTA Board Member, Omnia Nour-ROTA ROTA Director, Mohamed Al Jaidah, , Al Jaidah group, Dana Al Ferdan and Dhreima officials, graced the event with their presence and along with the volunteers conducted creative workshops with the kids after the Iftar.
ROTA also invited local community children, and individual volunteers to share this special occasions with Dhreima children.
In her comments, Sheikha Aisha bint Faleh Al Thani, said: "At ROTA we are focusing our efforts on the children and youth across Asia, including the Middle East of course. Funds are allocated to educational projects in crisis-affected areas in Asia, but we always have Qatar in our minds and hearts, involving the community and giving back to our society through various local projects. Today's Iftar is only one example of the exciting and good work that ROTA is doing in Qatar.".
Omnia Nour added "Through our volunteers' commitment and passion we have really made a difference to the kids today. It was a memorable experience for them but also for us! I would like to thank all our donors and sponsors that help us fulfill our mission in and outside Qatar".
At the iftar ROTA organized many activities to engage the volunteers with Drheima kids including henna, face painting, and balloon making. At the same time, volunteers organized the setting for the Iftar, reflecting the spirit of giving during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Operating under the auspices of the Qatar Foundation, ROTA has established itself as a significant player in the realm of international humanitarian relief and development, and particularly in the field of education in crisis. ROTA is committed to engaging youth; providing equal access to safe, quality primary and secondary education; connecting communities and educators; increasing social and economic opportunities; advocating for the universal right to education; and reaching out to assist in rebuilding communities after human-made and natural disasters.
