Description
Experiments were conducted to evaluate the availability to ruminants of lysine from hydroxymethyl lysine, a product potentially resistant to ruminal degradation yet able to release free lysine when subjected to the acidic environment of the abomasum. An in vitro ruminal fermentation assay that led to ammonia production from free lysine was used for initial assessments, but the hydroxymethyl lysine was inhibitory to lysine degradation at the concentrations tested in vitro; therefore, an in vivo assay with sheep, using plasma lysine concentrations as the response criterion, was used for assessment. twelve mature sheep were fed graded amounts of lysine from either a commercially available ruminally protected lysine product with known availability or from hydroxymethyl lysine. the protected lysine product provided 3 or 6 g/d of metabolizable lysine, whereas the hydroxymethyl lysine provided 3 or 6 g/d of total lysine …

Description
The objective of these studies was to characterize some factors affecting lysine degradation by mixed ruminal bacteria and by ruminal Fusobacterium necrophorum. Mixed ruminal bacteria degraded lysine, and addition of pure cultures of F. necrophorum did not increase lysine degradation. Addition of acetic or propionic acid strikingly reduced NH3 production from lysine by mixed ruminal bacteria at pH 6, but not at pH 7. Although typical ruminal environments with acidic pH and normal concentrations of volatile fatty acids might inhibit lysine degradation by F. necrophorum, ruminal fluid contained enough bacteria with a lysine-degrading capacity to ferment 50 mM lysine in vitro. Of 7 strains of ruminal F. necrophorumtested, all grew on both lactate and lysine as the primary energy source. Both subspecies of ruminal F. necrophorum (necrophorum and funduliforme) used lysine as a primary C and energy source …

Description
Two experiments were made. In experiment 1, four diets containing 0, 5, 15 and 25% washed seaweed meal were prepared to study the effects of incorporating seaweed meal instead of equivalent amounts of berseem leaf meal in fish feeds on growth performance and feed utilization of common carp. The results showed that average daily gain (ADG), specific growth rate (SGR%), dry matter (DM) and ether extract (EE) of the carcasses were decreased (p< 0.05) with the increasing level of seaweed meal in the feeds. Inclusion of 5% seaweed meal in the diet gave the best feed conversion ratio (FCR) among all diets, however, protein productive value (PPV) and energy utilization (EU) were decreased (p< 0.05) with increasing level of seaweed meal in the diet. In experiment 2, washed seaweed meal was either steam cooked or sprayed with NaOH (0.5% or 1% NaOH) and incorporated in the diets at the level of 25% instead of equivalent amount of berseem leaf meal. The results showed that steam cooked seaweed gave the best (p< 0.05) growth performance, FCR and protein efficiency ratios, PER and PPV, for other treatments in descending order were NaOH treated seaweed, washed seaweed and unwashed seaweed.

Description
Five dietary crude protein levels (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35% CP of dry weight) with two stocking densities (5 and 10 prawn/m3) were investigated in concrete basins for 84 days. The results showed that growth performance, feed and nutrient utilization of prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii juveniles were significantly (P< 0.05) increased by increasing the dietary crude protein level up to 30%. Increasing the stocking density from 5 to 10 prawn/m3 led to increase growth performance and feed & nutrient utilization, significantly (P< 0.05).

Description
The effect of chitosan incorporated into feed formulation on the growth, feed utilization, body composition and histological response of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was investigated. Final fish weight, feed conversion ratio (FCR), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), protein productive value (PPV), and energy utilization (EU) of sea bass feed chitosan supplemented diet and the control diet were determined at the end of experiment. Data presents mean±SD from triplicate determination (n= 3) for 75 days feeding trial. Different concentrations (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 & 4.0) and control without chitosan incorporated with total fish feed in the form of dry diets were fed for 75 days. Average final weight (FW) was significantly higher at diet 3 (1 g∙ kg− 1 chitosan) and the lowest in control fish group, specific growth rate (SGR) was significant at diet 3. Also, protein efficiency ratio (PER), protein productive value (PPV), and energy utilization (EU) showed the same trend. The chemical body composition, crude protein, dry matter, crude fat and ash were significant (P≤ 0.01) different compared to control groups. The present investigation suggested that the chitosan incorporated into diets of sea bass fish certainly enhanced the non specific responses and reduced mortality and also improved the growth performance of fish.
