Description
Two adult Fresian bulls fitted with permanent rumen fistulae were fed a high fiber diet in which 33% of the nitrogen was urea. The ration was offered in two equal portions every 12 hours. Samples of whole rumen contents were withdrawn before feeding and at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 hr after feeding. Rates of ammonia-N incorporation into microbial protein using (15 NH 4) 2 SO 4 (30% enriched), and volatile fatty acids were determined in each sample in vitro. Rumen volumes were measured using CrEDTA. Microbial protein synthesis determined by the use of 15 N was compared with that estimated by DAP and AEP Markers.

We estimated the prevalence, intensity, and abundance of swimbladder nematode infection in 1281 lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) collected from four sites in northern lakes Huron (Cheboygan and DeTour Village) and Michigan (Big Bay de Noc and Naubinway) from fall 2003 through summer 2006. Morphological examination of nematode egg, larval, and mature stages through light and scanning electron microscopy revealed characteristics consistent with that of Cystidicola farionis Fischer 1798. Total C. farionis prevalence was 26.94%, while the mean intensity and abundance of infection was 26.72 and 7.21 nematodes/fish, respectively. Although we detected C. farionis in all four stocks that were examined, Lake Huron stocks generally had higher prevalence, intensity, and abundance of infection than Lake Michigan stocks. The work described is an attempt to develop a reliable method for determining AEP when mixed with related substances from micro-organisms in the rumen. Hydrochloric acid hydrolysates of rumen contents, rumen bacteria, rumen ciliate protozoa and clarified rumen contents were applied to a column (10 × 1 cm) of Dowex 50–X8, eluted with 0·6 N hydrochloric acid and 2·4-ml fractions collected. Inorganic phosphorus was separated in column fractions 2–10 and AEP appeared in fractions 11–23.When fractions containing AEP were spotted on to Whatman No. 1 filter-paper strips the developed chromatograms showed six ninhydrin-positive spots in addition to that of AEP, which was the slowest acid to migrate (RF= 0·3). The substance giving spot No. 4, another phosphonic acid (RF= 0·59), was present in ciliate protozoa and ciliate-free fractions of rumen contents, whereas AEP was confined to protozoa. A highly …

DEUTSCH: Sojabohnen wurden O (I), 15 (II), 30 (III), 60 (IV) und 90 Minuten (V) lang autoklaviert. I-Sojabohnen verursachten einen sign. Abfall der Gewichtszunahme und der Futterverwertung gegenueber der Kontrollgruppe. Beste Ergebnisse bei III, gefolgt von II; IV und V erbrachten wieder schlechtere Ergebnisse. Hoechste Proteinretention im Fischkoerper bei II und der hoechste Fettgehalt bei III. Hoechste Protein-und Energieverwertung bei III, gefolgt von II und IV.
